Grany, Colorado ” In their season-opening competition, Middle Park High’s girls basketball team traveled last week to a tournament in Meeker where the Lady Panthers won one game and lost two.

Middle Park’s trip to Meeker was its first time playing in the Meeker Invitational. During the three-day tournament, Middle Park’s hoopsters lost to both Rangely and Grand Valley, but rebounded to win their final game against Telluride.

“It was a very successful tournament where we played each game stronger than the one before,” said Coach Cheri Amos.

The Meeker Invitational opened Thursday, Dec. 4 with the Lady Panthers falling to Rangely by a score of 58-26.

“It was our first game of the season and the girls were nervous,” Amos said. “We played good defense, but we just could not get the ball to drop through the hoop.”

Emily Abbott and Rachel Linke led the scoring with six points apiece, followed by Kristin VanHorn with five and Shelley McLean with four.

The tournament continued on Friday, Dec. 5 with Middle Park pitted against Grand Valley. The Lady Panthers picked up their play, but lost again 56-30.

“Our play was definitely a step above the Rangely game,” Amos said. “We were starting to get the bugs out. We had an especially good second half.”

Amos described it as a “very rough-and-tumble, physical game” by both teams. In the fourth quarter, Middle Park’s offense really kicked in and outshot their opponents two to one.

Scoring was distributed across Middle Park’s lineup with Kristin VanHorn leading with eight points, followed by Quincey Pedersen with six, Rachel Linke with five and Cindy Hobbs with four. Emily Abbott and Rachel Linke led the rebounding with nine each.

After those two losses, the Lady Panthers were more than ready for a win and they got it on the tournament’s final day, Saturday, Dec. 6. Taking on Telluride, Middle Park’s players dominated the game, winning it 36-22.

“It all came together and we controlled that game from start to finish,” Amos said. “Our kids did a fantastic job on defense. Shelley McLean shut down Telluride’s top scorer and playmaker.”

Two Lady Panthers went into double digits in their scoring. Kristin VanHorn scored 13 points while Quincey Pedersen earned the team’s first “double-double” by making 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Amos complimented the team’s offensive and defensive play against Telluride. She had special praise for first-year varsity players Cindy Hobbs and McCall Linke.

The Lady Panthers have this weekend off, but will return to competition next week during the High Country Invitational, which is a home tournament.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, Middle Park’s girls will play West Grand at 3 p.m., followed by a game against Love Christian on Friday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. The home tournament will conclude Saturday, Dec. 20 with the Lady Panthers playing Meeker at 1 p.m.
