The Middle Park Nordic team had a great race on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Nederland, with Samantha Miyauchi and Ben Shipman both qualifying for state in the skating technique, said coach Wade Wilderman.

Four girls were in the top 13, and Eric Shurson skied to a third place finish.

“Eric asked me what I thought he should do ” go for it or just ski for the training ” and I told him I was leaving it entirely up to him,” Wilderman said. “He said he was going to go for it, and it was really sweet when he got his best finish ever.”

Mackenzie Wilderman ended up getting her best finish ever in sixth place after getting 13th at the home race at Devil’s Thumb Ranch.

“I was standing out on the course and she came blasting up a hill using V2 technique, which is usually reserved for flats and slight downhills. I was really surprised to see her do that,” Wilderman said.

The Nederland course was a 5K time trial with skiers going off in intervals. The Middle Park boys team finished in fourth place, with 143 points. The winner was Nederland with 167 points. Middle Park’s girls came in second with a total score of 160. The winner was Nederland, with 175 points.

Wilderman is optimistic.

“We have had a lot of fun this season and had some really good results, so hopefully the team … will continue their upward trend and rock it at Steamboat next week.”
