Granby " Panther softball team improves to 4-2
September 5, 2008
Middle Park High’s girls softball team added another victory to its early-season record with a dominating 16-6 win over Bishop Machebeuf on the Panthers’ home field on Thursday, Aug. 28.
The victory brings the team’s 2008 record to 4-2. This represents a major turnaround for the Panther girls, who suffered through a winless season last year.
As Thursday’s home game began, Machebeuf’s Buffalos immediately took a two-run lead at the top of the first inning that was helped along by Panther fielding errors.
Coming up to bat in the bottom of that inning, Middle Park then narrowed the gap by one run. Alex Gallegos blasted a double into the outfield to drive in Corrine Zimmerly, who had gotten on base with a walk.
After holding the Buffalos scoreless at the top of the second inning, the Panthers took the lead with four runs at the bottom of that inning. The first run was earned by Jillian Yaklich, who stole home plate on a passed ball, followed by two more runs scoring on a double hit by Becca Hugley. Katie Mattfield added the fourth run by stealing home on another passed ball.
But Machebeuf was not about to quit. At the top of the third inning, the Buffalos regained the lead with four runs of their own. Their first run scored on a double, which was then followed by a three-run homer due to a series of Panther fielding errors.

Embarrassed by those defensive missteps, Middle Park players were determined to exact revenge when they came up to bat at the bottom of the third. And revenge is what they got as they went on a seven-run scoring spree.
The Panthers’ first run in the third inning was earned by baserunner Gallegos who sprinted to home plate after Machebeuf’s throwing errors turned Kagen Boy’s bunt into a triple. The Buffalos then repeated their throwing errors, allowing Mattfield to double while Boy sprinted across home plate.
Middle Park’s third-inning rally continued with Zimmerly tripling to earn two RBIs as baserunners Kathryn Woodard and Hannah Davidson ran for home. Gallegos followed that up with a single to drive in Mattfield. Then with the bases loaded, Boy singled to pick up two RBIs as Hugley and Katelyn Anderson sped across home plate to raise the score to 12-6.
Middle Park’s defense held firm for the next three innings, preventing Machebeuf from scoring any more runs.
While the Buffalos remained stymied in the batting box, Panthers earned a couple more runs over the next two innings on passed balls with Zimmerly scoring one in the fourth and Gallegos in the fifth.
Middle Park then put the game away early by scoring two more runs in the sixth inning, which forced the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 10-run rule to go into effect and end play.
Zimmerly scored the 15th run on a passed ball while the team’s 16th run was earned by Mattfield, who scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Gallegos.
Panther pitcher Katie Mulligan earned five strikeouts while giving up only two walks against Machebeuf.
Middle Park High’s softball players will be on the road to Gypsum this weekend for the Eagle Valley Tournament, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6.
