Ice fishing tournament returns to Wolford Mountain
February 17, 2015
It is time once again to gather the fishing gear and head on over to the west end of Grand County for the 18th annual Wolford Mountain Reservoir Ice Fishing Tournament.
The competition will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Wolford Mountain Reservoir. Folks can begin staking out their favorite spot on the ice starting at 6 a.m., but hole drilling is not allowed until 7 a.m. Only fish caught between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday will be eligible for the contest.
Over $15,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs this weekend at Wolford. There will be a $10,000 prize for the winning tagged-fish competition.
The tagged fish competition has been going on for eight years now at Wolford and involves contest organizers tagging a specific number of fish with lottery numbers. This year tournament organizers have put 15 tagged fish into Wolford Mountain Reservoir.
Once a tagged fish has been caught and presented to the judges, its tag will be checked to see if it is the winning number. Only one of the 15-tagged fish has the winning tag. Anglers who pull in a non-winning tagged fish will still receive $250.
Since the tagged fish competition has been going on for numerous years it is possible for contestants to catch a tagged fish from a previous year. Tagged fish from previous tournaments are not eligible for cash prizes.
