Jackie Wright: 10 reasons you haven’t thought of to work out regularly

OK, maybe you have thought of one or two of the following 10 reasons to work out regularly, but these are a little more obscure than the excellent primary reasons for exercising regularly. And, thinking out of the traditional "exercise box" is a great way to keep you on track, and if you have fallen off track, get you back in gear and following the path to an excellent health and fitness lifestyle.

Additionally, the 10 reasons highlighted this week are just the tip of the iceberg. Take a moment, consider these and then see if you can identify 10 more! As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.

Reason 1: When you work out regularly you do not have to "think" about it all of the time, you just do it! What a relief! Many less consistent exercisers, or those that have not made the leap yet, spend a huge amount of time contemplating exercising or beating themselves up about not exercising. So, think of all of the time you would enjoy spending on more productive pursuits!

Reason 2: Happiness — while I cannot quantify this reason to work out, it seems to present itself regularly in my business. Individuals that workout regularly may feel better about themselves and, consequently, their self-esteem and self-confidence may improve leading to a happier life.

Reason 3: You spread the good health and fitness word to others improving their lives (i.e. the Golden Rule)!

Reason 4: Cognition may improve in many cases due to a plethora of reasons but not the least of which, you are thinking about the intricacies of your workout while working out rather than all of the stressors and anxieties in the outside world.

Reason 5: Making better dietary choices. Yes, this is one that many of you already are aware of, but rather than "knowing" this information, experience it firsthand by working out regularly.

Reason 6: Playing better! Absolutely, you are fitter, so you may play safer and more effectively, which is much more fun!

Reason 7: Getting a break from television and social media. Well, this is if you do not watch television while working out and you are not one of those individuals that get on cardio equipment and talk on the phone or send text messages the entire time. Distracted exercise is much less effective than focused exercise, and when you spend your time distracted while exercising you forfeit one of the most important benefits of exercise — stress reduction!

Reason 8: Socialization. While this may not be true for all exercisers, it is true for many and this may enhance your life. We all need people and we need to meet other people from all walks of life to broaden and deepen our knowledge of and tolerance for those that are different from ourselves. Walk into any health club and you will encounter an entire microcosm of society.

Reason 9: When you achieve your fitness goals, you may be more likely to achieve your other business and personal life goals.

Reason 10: Becoming less of an "ostrich," meaning you tend to pull your head out of the sand, look around and see the whole world right in front of you!
