What does the word “routine” actually mean? Well, according to the dictionary definition, a routine is the “usual pattern of activity.” When the word “routine” is utilized, it is often in connection with something that is boring or unvarying; however, a routine is critical when establishing a positive pattern of behavior.
Developing an exercise program or “routine” may help you find a path to health and fitness success or, if you have a routine currently, perhaps it needs a boost to keep you on track. Following the acronym R.O.U.T.I.N.E., regardless of where you are in your health and fitness journey, may give you the winning strategies to succeed. As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.
R-egular – creating a regular, habitual, systematic and consistent exercise program that you can and WILL perform is an essential winning step. So, seek out a fitness professional to get you on the right track from the beginning. Learn the safe and effective elements of exercise so that you will avoid potential injury due to lack of knowledge and will benefit from effectively designed programs achieving the results you seek. No one size fits anyone – so, seek out a program that is designed specifically with your limitations and needs in mind.
O-ptions – exercise options which are innovative and interesting and that fit your specific lifestyle needs may enable you to stick with the routine. The routine itself simply implies that it is regular enough to elicit the positive outcomes you seek. Therefore, since everyone’s life is dynamic, creating options to meld with your life will keep you on track.
U-nique – unique routines are also essential to ensure exercise success. Unique, distinctive, scientifically based and creatively designed programs tend to lead to adherence. So, locate routines that will keep your interest peaked and avoid boredom or exercise burnout.

T-imely – timely routines which will provide you with results but do not take all day are invaluable. You need to get all five physical fitness components in several times a week, but this requirement may be divided into different routines for different days very efficiently achieving the goals you have set.
I-ntervals – intervals are a great way to “timely” perform your routines. Intervals may concentrate on sustainable aerobic power, working at higher levels of intensity but not becoming breathless, or can be high intensity interval training (H.I.T.T.) which challenges you to a point of breathlessness or momentary muscle failure, followed by adequate recovery prior to pushing again.
N-utrition – nutrition is key when we are discussing fitness routines. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in exercise performance as the food we input is broken down into biological energy and is literally the fuel for the fire that keep us moving. Locate a licensed, registered dietitian and sit down for a consultation. It will be money well spent.
E-volution -Stay excited about your health and fitness routine by continuing to evolve. Creating an evolving routine by continuously moving forward, remaining energized while achieving outcomes, and meaningful, life altering results is one of the most important tenants of health and fitness success.
So, follow the R.O.U.T.I.N.E. and feel like a million bucks every day.
