Kelly Allen named All-State volleyball
December 5, 2012
Middle Park High School senior Kelly Allen was selected and participated in the 35th annual CCGS (Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports) All-State Volleyball games held at Arvada West High School.
The event showcased 90 athletes in five All-State games. Kelly was the sole athlete from the Frontier League to participate.
She played on the 3A Blue Team along with players from Valley, Sterling, Platte Valley, University, Holy Family, and St. Mary’s High Schools. Coaches for the team were Rene Aafedt and Michekke Chacon both from Valley High School. Their team went 3-0 against the 3A Red Team.
Ruby Miller, Hall of Fame inductee in 1979, was a founding member of CCGS.
“I really had one goal, to help young women become better individuals, and I thought I could do that best through coaching,” said Ruby. “I thought if young women could be winners in sports, they could be winners in life.”
Kelly says she was very nervous about the event.

“I felt like a small town girl going to compete with and against athletes that are much better players than me,” she said.
However, after the two day event that included practice, scrimmages, an evening banquet and the official games, Kelly’s outlook changed.
“Our nine-player team consisted of five setters, so we really had to work together. My position on the Middle Park High School team is the setter, but with help from my coach Nicci Guerrieri to prepare for the games I think I played well offensively as the ALL-STATE team’s left hitter and outside hitter and had some good defensive blocks with my teammates. It was great!,” she said.
“I stay in contact with the new friends I made during the event. Nicci Guerrieri and Jim Glenn have been my only coaches and I’ve had the same team members since middle school. This has given me confidence to play on a college team and adapt to a different coach and teammates.”
“Kelly Allen is one of the most skilled athletes to go through Middle Park High School’s Volleyball program,” said Nicci Guerrieri, head volleyball coach at Middle Park High School. “She is a gifted athlete and is compassionate about being a positive leader. Kelly has lettered all 4 years in volleyball. She received all conference honors last year as a junior, and this year she not only received All Conference honors, but she was nominated by coaches as Frontier League Volleyball Player of the year. Kelly also received All State honors. She represented Middle Park High School and The Frontier League at the All State Games. Way to go Kelly.”
Kelly extended her appreciation to Coach Nicci for attending the banquet and games along with her family and friends that came to cheer on her team.
