Middle Park boys, girls finish 9th, 10th at state ski championships in Steamboat Springs

Middle Park High’s ski racers finished well down in the results of the 2008 Colorado High School Skiing Championships held in Steamboat Springs last week.
The Panther skiers were already down after the first day of competition on Thursday, Feb. 21 (see the Monday, Feb. 25 edition of the Sky-Hi Daily News). The results for Middle Park’s alpine and Nordic skiers during the last day of competition on Friday, Feb. 22, did not improve their standings.
In the overall team results for the 2008 state championships, the Panther girls ended up taking a ninth place in their 14-team competition. Middle Park’s boys finished 10th in the results for their 15-team contest.
The winner of both the boys and girls team titles for the 2008 state championships was Summit. Vail earned the runner-up spot in the boys competition while Aspen took second in the girls contest. Third place in for both boys and girls was taken by the host team from Steamboat Springs.
Nordic results Friday
In the girls 5-kilometer classic technique race held at Steamboat’s Howlson Hill, Summit’s Briana Perkins skied for another first-place finish after winning first place in the 5K skate on Thursday.

In Friday’s race, Perkins kicked and glided to victory with a time of 16:42, just one second ahead of Vail Mountain’s Karlie Moore who took the runner-up spot with 16:43. Third place in Friday’s 5K went to Lindsey Wilkinson of Aspen with 17:54.
Middle Park’s fastest skier in Friday’s girls 5K classic was Makenna Morck, who crossed the finish line in a time of 20:17 for 25th place. Right behind her in 26th place was teammate Mackenzie Wilderman who skied the course in 20:32. Finishing 29th in 20:53 was the Panthers’s Ryndi Zastrow.
In the boys 5K classic technique race Friday, Chris Woods of Vail Mountain raced to victory in a time of 14:59. Close behind him was Aspen’s Whit Parker who took second place with 15:05. And right on his ski tails was Sean Woods of Vail Mountain who placed third in 15:06.
The Panthers’ fastest skier in the boys 5K was Ben Shipman who placed 22nd with a ski time of 17:13. A couple of strides behind him was teammate Eric Shurson who turned in a time of 17:18 for 23rd place. Hugh McDonough was next for 28th place with 17:35.
Also racing the boys 5K for Middle Park was Matt Curran who placed 37th in 18:55, and Matthew Naschak who skied 18:55 for 39th place.
Alpine results Friday
In the state meet’s alpine competition Friday, the skiers were competing in the giant slalom at Steamboat’s Mount Werner.
The winner of the girls GS was Battle Mountain’s Jenny Banner after she skied a combined time over two runs of 1:39.0. Keeli Zigich of Evergreen took second with 1:40.3. Third place was earned by Erin Breslin of Summit with 1:40.5.
Middle Park had two skiers in Friday’s GS. Kylie Kroneberger finished in 16th place with a combined time after two runs of 1:46.2. Panthers Brenna Dee took 27th with 1:53.3.
In the boys’ giant slalom races Friday, Summit’s skiers were one and two. Zach Fretz won first place with a combined time after two runs of 1:34.6. His teammate Drew Beling was the runner-up with 1:36.6. Third place went to Aspen’s James Britvar with 12:37.5.
The Panthers had one skier in Friday’s GS. Matt Hydrusko took a spill on the course and did not finish the race.
