On Nov 17, the Panther football team hosted it’s annual awards banquet at Middle Park High School to hand out internal and All-Conference Awards with dinner provided by the East Grand Grid-iron Club. “I would like to thank all members of our community for supporting us this year and especially the Grid-Iron Club”, said Head Coach Troy Schmidt. The Grid-Iron Club is led by president Gina Macchione and completes many projects for the benefit of East Grand kids. “We had a very successful year, but we still have work to do to get to where we want to be,” said Schmidt. The Panthers narrowly missed the state playoffs again and finished the season with seven wins and three losses.

The first awards of the evening were the “Panther Football Passion” awards that went to Conner Whitford and Hayden Fisher. The recipients were recognized by the coaching staff for their tireless efforts preparing the varsity each week while showing tremendous heart and love of the game. Two “Newcomers to football” were awarded to a junior and a sophomore who had never played football until this year. Both of them found themselves playing a major role for the Panthers this season. The award winners were Ben Eaton and Scott Crawford.

Next came the “Courage” Award that went to senior Sam Little for his unbelievable attitude and loyalty to his teammates throughout his injury suffered in the final game of the season.

The final internal award was the Brian Storm Memorial award which is awarded to the player that doesn’t always have the biggest body, but has the heart and intensity of a lion. The award is in honor of All-State football player Brian Storm who played football for Middle Park and his passion lives on. This year’s winner was senior Brian Macchione.

The selections to the All-Flatirons Conference Football team were awarded next. Members selected as Honorable Mention for the Flatirons included senior offensive lineman Daniel Arrellano, junior tight end and linebacker, Steven Kentfield, junior defensive back, Henry Southway, and sophomore offensive lineman, Jace Linke.

The members of the All-Flatirons 2nd team were awarded to senior defensive back, Simeon Anderson, junior quarterback, linebacker and kicker, John Stensvad, junior tight end and linebacker, Connor Jennings, and junior offensive lineman Kane Hutchinson.

First team All-Flatirons Conference Players were awarded to senior defensive end and fullback, Brian Macchione, senior running back and safety, Sam Little, senior linebacker and running back, Adam Weaver, and junior linebacker and offensive lineman, Nick Brynoff.

The final awards and some of the most prestigious in the conference were given out next. Each year the Flatirons Conference recognizes an outstanding senior lineman of the year and an outstanding senior back of the year. This year Middle Park’s Brian Macchione was recognized as the outstanding senior lineman in the 2A Flatirons Conference. This award gives Brian the opportunity to play in the CHSCA all-state football game next summer. It is significant to note that Sam Little finished second for senior back of the year. The final award given was the most outstanding defensive player of the conference which also went to Brian Macchione.

Middle Park also expects to place some players on the Denver Post all-state team, but those will not be announced for a couple of weeks.

“Every member of our team should feel like they contributed to the extent of our numerous all-conference awards. That goes from the scout team to the varsity, everyone had a part of it. No one would get those awards without an entire team effort,” said Schmidt. “I can’t describe my feelings for what this team has accomplished both on and off the field.”
