NSCD hosts 28th Winter Park Open

The National Sports Center for the Disabled will host the 28th Annual Winter Park Open from Wednesday, Dec. 16 to Dec. 19 at Winter Park Resort.

The competition will see adaptive athletes from around the globe vying for qualification points for the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"This year we are excited to welcome our returning athletes and of course, some new up and coming athletes that are training for the Winter Paralympics in South Korea," said Erik Petersen, competition director for the NSCD, in a press release. "We encourage the public to come up to Winter Park Resort and see these world class athletes in action and compete."

More than 50 athletes from the United States, Canada, Chile, Sweden, New Zealand, Japan, Iceland and Great Britain will compete.

Alison Kunkel of Chicago is a new participant in the NSCD's competition program and one of the event's up and coming athletes. Kunkel, who suffers a below the elbow impairment, is a Paralympic hopeful in both slalom and giant slalom racing.

Adam Hall, a Winter Park local, is a returning athlete competing in slalom.

Hall, originally from New Zealand, suffers from spinal bifida and has skied competitively with the NSCD for more than ten years.

He's a two-time Paralympian and won a gold medal in slalom at the 2010 Winter Paralympics.

Races start at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each day.
