GRANBY – The Panther boys basketball team was crowned champion at the annual Mountain Parks Electric Tournament this past weekend at Middle Park High School.

On Friday night in a classic rivalry, a large and enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a thrilling game as the Panthers outlasted the West Grand Mustangs.

It came down to the final 3/10 of a second when the Panthers were called for a foul on an inbound pass. With no time left on the clock, the Mustangs were only able to convert 1 of 2 foul shots and fell short, losing 49 to 48 to the Panthers.

“What an awesome game,” said Panther Coach Shawn McElroy afterwards. “This is what rivalry games are all about. Two talented teams playing their best in front of a large and noisy crowd. It was very, very exciting.”

Coach McElroy also had plenty of praise for his Panthers and thought it was their best effort to date. Playing without their high scorer Ben Eaton (injured), Cort Brennan and Johnny Stensvad stepped up and led the team with 20 and 13 points respectively.

On Saturday, the Panthers won their second game of the weekend by defeating the Platte Canyon Huskies 41 to 23. Despite a slow start by Middle Park, scoring only 2 points in the first quarter, the Panthers roared back to finish the game 41 to 23 over the visitors.

Coach McElroy credited the turn around to the pressing defense led by Sam Little, Adam Weaver and Henry Southway, which completely stymied the Huskies. The win secured the tournament championship for the Middle Park Boys, matching the Middle Park Girls who also won their title earlier in the afternoon.

Named to the All Tournament team were Middle Park’s Cort Brennan and Johnny Stensvad.
