West Grand wrestlers start strong at season opening tournament
December 6, 2007
Six of the seven West Grand High School wrestlers finished fourth or higher at the Carl Ramunno Invitational Tournament last weekend in Steamboat Springs.
Eric Scholl earned top honors in the 152 -pound weight division to lead the team, which is coached by Jeff Matney and Cody Mumma. Three of the wrestlers are freshmen and will be asked to participate in numerous varsity matches this season.
The tournament was operated in a “round robin” format to maximize the number of matches in which the participants could wrestle. At this point of the season coaches typically like to get as many matches and as much mat time as possible for their wrestlers.
In individual matches, Scholl started the tournament by pinning Will Elliott, also of West Grand, in 3:24. Scholl continued his winning ways by defeating Hayden Davison of Saratoga, Wyo., by a score of 5-3. The junior from West Grand then pinned Chris DeBowes from Hayden in 57 seconds and in round four pinned Eric Fleming from Moffat County, also in 57 seconds.
At 103 pounds, freshman Lee Elliott of West Grand finished in fourth place. In his three matches, he was pinned by Cody Nelson of Moffat County, by Scott Armbruster from Hayden in round two and then by Shaun Price from Soroco in round three.
AJ Silva, wrestling at 125 pounds, started the tournament by pinning Nate Moon from Moffat County in a time of 3:08. Silva was than pinned by Levi Gonzales from Soroco and defeated by Matt Linsacum from Moffat Count by a score of 7-5. In round four, the junior from West Grand earned third place by defeating Chase Hill from West Grand by a score of 15-3.
