Winter Park skiers post top finishes at Eldora Surefoot Cup races

The ski racers of the Winter Park Competition Center’s team were back at the top of the results in the latest Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup races held at Eldora Ski Area near Nederland last weekend.

Molly Leonard of the Winter Park team earned a couple of third-place finishes in the women’s giant slalom and slalom races Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9. A couple other skiers on the team took top-10 places as well.

In the men’s races, Winter Park’s Christopher Acosta earned a couple of top-10 finishes, including a fourth place, during the races at Eldora.

Women’s results

Winter Park’s Molly Leonard skied to a third-place finish in Saturday’s GS with a combined time after two runs of 2:02.76. She was just a fraction of a second behind the runner-up Katie Hartman of Summit with 2:02.59. The GS was won by Ann West of Steamboat Springs in 2:01.55.

The other Winter Park skier to break in the GS’s top 10 was Chelsea Nova, who raced to a sixth-place finish with a time of 2:03.98.

The results for the rest of Winter Park’s skiers in the women’s GS on Saturday are: 15. Kelia Zigich, 2:09.07; 20. Sarah Williams, 1:09.99; 32. Stephanie Simenstad, 2:13.04; 40. Kylie Kroneberger, 2:17.58; 41. Danice Fark, 2:17.95; 44. Samantha Berggren, 2:20.96.

The Surefoot competition at Eldora continued Sunday with slalom races. Once again, Winter Park’s Molly Leonard flashed down the race course to take third place with a combined time after two runs of 1:51.35.

Sunday’s slalom was won by Steamboat’s Ann West with 1:49.76. The runner-up was Angel Collinson of the West Division team with a time of 1:50.83.

Winter Park also had a second skier in the top-10 of the slalom. Kelia Zigich placed seventh in 1:56.66.

The result’s for Winter Park’s other skiers in the women’s slalom are: 15. Sarah Williams, 1:58.31; 24. Stephanie Simenstad, 2:02.74; 25. Samantha Berggren, 2:03.34; 29. Kylie Kroneberger, 2:07.16.

Men’s results

In the men’s giant slalom races on Saturday at Eldora, one of Winter Park’s racers skied to a top-10 finish. Christopher Acosta earned a fourth place with a combined time after two runs of 1:57.25.

Acosta’s finish was just a fraction of a second behind the third-place time of 1:57.16 earned by John Kemp. Second place went to Marc Perathoner with 1:56.90. The GS winner was Eric Davis with 1:56.37.

The results for the rest of Winter Park’s ski racers in Saturday’s GS are: 16. Spencer Nelson, 1:59.47; 48. Nicholas Zeller, 2:07.53; 63. Hans Berggren, 2:13.31.

In Sunday’s slalom for the men, Winter Park’s Christopher Acosta was back in the top 10. He skied to a ninth-place finish with a combined time after two runs of 1:52.58.

The winner of the men’s slalom was Nicholaus Kullas of Steamboat Springs with a time of 1:47.41. The runner-up was Gary Beresford of the University of New Mexico with 1:47.95. Fletcher McDonald of Summit was third in 1:49.44.

Winter Park had one other finisher in Sunday’s slalom. Nicholas Zeller skied to a 14th place in a time of 1:59.66.

Upcoming races

The Surefoot tour continues with Breckenridge hosting two giant slalom races for the men, and Vail holding two GS races for the women. These two sets of races are part of the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Championships slated for Thursday and Friday, April 3-4.

The 2008 Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Tour is Colorado’s elite alpine ski race series.

This winter, it has so far attracted skiers representing 10 different nations, as well as athletes from some of the top NCAA schools in the country.
