Terry Mathews: War memorial ‘mirror’ has purpose
June 7, 2012
I read with interest about the 8th graders’ visit to D.C., because I was stationed at the Pentagon for nine years. The story brought back many fond memories, and I especially took note of the comment about the mirror finish of the wall at the Korean War Memorial.
For those who may not be aware, it was originally intended that the Memorial include sufficient statues to represent an entire platoon of soldiers. However, funds and space was only available to provide for half of the original number of statues.
The mirror finish on the wall provides a reflection the other half of the platoon, and therefore, the original intent to represent an entire platoon was achieved.
