Two people and two dogs died in a plane crash Thursday night in a hay meadow on the Grand River Ranch about two miles west of Kremmling, officials at the scene confirmed.

The crash occurred at about 8 p.m. after the plane, which was bound for Kremmling’s McElroy Field from Las Vegas, Nev., circled town at least once, according to witnesses. Unconfirmed eyewitness reports also indicate the plane may have been experiencing engine trouble.

Officials at Denver International Airport told local authorities that the plane was attempting to land at McElroy. Conditions at the time of the accident included a low cloud ceiling.

Authorities were alerted when calls to the Kremmling Police Department reported the fire that resulted from the crash.
