Weld County deputy shot, killed during foot chase
November 24, 2010
EVANS, Colo. (AP) – The Weld County sheriff’s department is mourning the loss of a deputy killed in a shoot-out, the first deputy to be killed there in 70 years.
Forty-three-year-old Sam Brownlee, a five-year member of the department, died Tuesday after a chase that ended in a shoot-out with a suspected car thief in Evans.
The suspect, 20-year-old Rueben Reyes of Fort Morgan, also died after undergoing surgery.
The Greeley Tribune reports that he was sentenced earlier this year to 90 days in jail in a felony menacing case. Court records also show he has a history of driving-related offenses.
The chase lasted a little over an hour, starting in Morgan County and crossing into Weld County. Authorities say Reyes got out of the car in an Evans subdivision and ran.
