West Grand High School Principal Philip Bonds tendered his resignation to the school board Tuesday night, effective at the end of the school year in June.

Stating that his work here is done, Bonds said he will be looking for a district with below average standardized testing scores, a district that is looking for somebody “just like him.”

Bonds told the school board that he began his hunt for a new job last year and thought it only fair – in light of the current economic situation at the district – to let the board know now that his plan is not to return.

“Maybe this will be an opportunity to save teaching positions with some creative juggling of the administration,” he said.

Superintendent Kevin Chalfant reported to the county board of commissioners on Tuesday that the district would need to cut some $300,000 from its fiscal year 2011 budget, and possibly as many as eight teaching positions.

Bonds said he doesn’t have anything specific lined up, but if nothing comes through he can qualify for retirement.

“Maybe there’s a golf course in Arizona with my name on it,” he said.

Prior to moving to West Grand, Bonds worked for the Rangely school district for nearly two decades.

The board also accepted a letter of resignation from high school volleyball coach Susan Billington.
