West Grand hosts regional band concert
April 12, 2012
On April 26, the instrumental music departments of Hayden, Soroco and West Grand will combine to form a large band and present a concert at 6:30 pm in the West Grand High School Auditorium. This is an opportunity for the students who normally play in a smaller band to have the experience of performing in a larger group.
The day will begin with each band performing selections for a judge and being evaluated on their prepared performance and sight-reading by experienced band director Rob Merritt, who has had a notable career in music education in Colorado and understands the unique nature of small-school music programs.
In the afternoon, the bands will rehearse together on music they have been practicing and present a concert of those selections in the evening. There will be a percussion ensemble, a jazz-band performance and four selections by the combined bands. There will be approximately 65 student musicians in grades 8-12 involved in the small schools combined band project.
On May 8, the combined bands will perform in Hayden, and on May 15 they will perform in Oak Creek (Soroco) during Hayden and Soroco’s Spring Concerts.
For the concert in Kremmling, admission is free, however donations to help with the cost of the event will be accepted.
The Hayden band is directed by Derek Hurshman, the Soroco band is directed by Kelli Turnipseed and the West Grand band is directed by Daniel Bowerly.
