In the spotlight | 2018 Best teacher, 9-12: Brad Pregeant
October 26, 2018
Louisiana native Brad Pregeant has deep roots in the New Orleans jazz scene and for the past decade he has helped spread his deep love of music to the students of Grand County.
Readers of Sky-Hi News selected Pregeant, music director for both Middle Park High School and East Grand Middle School, as the best high school teacher in Grand County. The revelation was surprising to the affable music man.
"I am humbled by it," Pregeant said. "I am trying to live up to the standards I see around me every day. We have a high performing faculty and staff."
Pregeant began his career as a teacher in Grand County after spending many years as a full-time musician and performer including a yearlong stint working on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. He worked as a special education paraprofessional for a year before starting his teaching duties.
Since taking the reins of the middle school and high school music programs in East Grand, Pregeant has overseen an expansion of the music department by leaps and bounds. During his first year as a teacher, the Middle Park High School band included just seven members while the choir tallied a total of nine. The high school band currently boasts 33 students while the middle school band features 120 young musicians.
For Pregeant, it is the love of music and the relationships he forms with his students that make his work so enjoyable.
"I have so many great experiences with the kids," Pregeant said. "I get to go out and perform with them. I like to say I get to be a kid again."
