Free avalanche class Wednesday at Winter Park Pub

Avalanche danger has been lingering between levels of high and considerable for the Front Range over the past week. The importance of avalanche knowledge is vital to all snow sports, but Grand County is unique with our access to Berthoud Pass. Berthoud gives the illusion, to some, that it is a safe place to ski because of its proximity to the road and easy access, but this is not always the case. It is not uncommon to see multiple skiers and snowboarders on Berthoud with no avalanche gear at all. While there are many informed, prepared, and experienced skiers and riders on Berthoud, the inexperience of just one person could get many in danger.

In an effort to give folks general information on avalanches, Grand County Search and Rescue and Friends of Berthoud Pass have been providing the public with free basic classes. Tonight (Wednesday) a free avalanche class will be held at the Winter Park Pub from 7-9 p.m.

The class will provide the public with basic knowledge, and more importantly—where to attain more avalanche information through classes and certifications.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) website, the first avalanche fatalities of the winter occurred in Nevada on Dec. 10 and Montana on Dec. 11.

The Front Range area, which includes Grand County, is still in considerable avalanche danger as of Dec. 13. CAIC projects that avalanche danger will still be reported at considerable on Dec. 14.
