Grand Lake celebrates Winter Carnival on Saturday

Grab the family and your winter weather gear and head on up to Grand Lake this weekend for the annual Grand Lake Winter Carnival.

The Carnival will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the popular Tea Pot Curling event. Tea Pot Curling will take place in the Grand Lake Town Ice Rink. There is a $5 entry fee per person for the competition. The top three teams will split prize money.

Events are scheduled to take place throughout Saturday with the Wilderness, Wildlife & Wonder Ball, held at Pancho & Lefty’s, going until midnight and wrapping up the Carnival’s events. The Grand Lake King and Queen for the Winter Carnival will be announced during the ball.



Candidates for this year’s King & Queen titles are: Tom & Judy Tumblin nominated by Sagebrush BBQ & Grill; Darrell & Missy Woods nominated by Sagebrush Bar; Tony Rendon & Lori Agazio nominated by the Town of Grand Lake; Adam & Jeanie Baird nominated by Daven Haven; Mike Arnston & Sarah Chabot nominated by the Grand Lake Fire Dept. & Stalk Market; John Amerman & Betsy Pettit nominated by Grand Lake Wine & Spirits and Cabin Quilts & Stitches; Jon T. Hal & Leona “Lee” Goettel nominated by the Lariat Saloon; Kai & Jorden Brosze – Gasner nominated by Pancho & Lefty’s and Rocky Mountain Outfitters; and DJ Parker & Abby McDaniel nominated by The Roadhouse.

The morning will also feature a Wild Snowman contest and snow golf at the Grand Lake town park. The youngsters will get into the action starting at 11 a.m. with the Kids Wild Steeplechase, also held in the town park.



The Wilderness, Wildlife & Wonder Parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. Participants should line up by the bowling alley ahead of time.

A Parent/Child Sled Pull event will be held on Main Street following the parade. Following up just afterwards will be the Bed Sled Races, also held on Main Street. Bed Sled races feature three or four contestants pushing a single passenger on the bed sled. The event requires a $25 entry fee.

Beginning at 2 p.m. folks can get a little speed and excitement playing Human Bowling. Participants will aim a saucer with one rider at a set of 10 empty water jugs that will function as pins. The event will be broken up into both kid and adult divisions. There is a $10 entry fee per team for adults; kids play free. There will be cash prizes for adults.

The Antique Vintage Snowmobile Club of Colorado will be holding a snowmobile show and oval races on Grand Lake throughout the day.

A series of snow sculptures will be available for viewing throughout the day and judging of the works of art will be done at 3 p.m. Winners of the competition will not be announced until the Wilderness, Wildlife & Wonder Ball in the evening.

Grand Lake will once again light up the night sky with a festive fireworks display over the lake set to begin at 8 p.m. Make sure to find a great vantage point for viewing the show.
