What is your day like when your working on your art?
The day starts very early. We almost always plan to meet around 7 a.m. to carpool to our location. All of the details have been worked out ahead of time. It is up early, pack my backpack with paint and supplies, eat a hasty breakfast, pack a lunch and a lot of water! Don't forget the hat and the sunscreen. Dash off to meet my painting partners. Maybe have time when we get to McDonalds or Kum & Go for a cup of coffee. Other times we meet downtown Grand Lake or the Visitors Center in Rocky Mountain National Park. Get to our location. Look around. Everywhere you look is beautiful, decisions, decisions! Finally I zero in on a scene that makes me the happiest, either the colors are the most beautiful or the shadows are perfect or I think it will be the most fun to paint. We paint fast, little talking, little moving around, just painting and soaking up the beauty of the area. We stop at lunch. Eat like farm hands, painting takes a lot of energy. We visit and catch up on the latest news, but generally the talking pivots around painting. We are back at our easels and painting until it gets too hot, it rains, we get tired or we finish!
But no matter the location or the weather, its a wonderful day to be able to paint in the Grand Lake area.
What is the best part of being an artist in Grand County?
I think the best part is the awesome group of artist who participate in plein air painting in Grand Lake. We have a group called "Art Out of Thin Air" and they are a wonderfully talented group of artist. Equally important is the beautiful scenery. Everywhere you look there is a painting, the splendor of the mountains, the majestic green pines and the golden Aspen, reflections on the water, and always a perfectly beautiful blue sky.
