Pianist Vanessa Perez closes the Grand County Concert Series
March 20, 2016
Vanessa Perez, a pianist and rising star from Venezuela, performed the Grand County Concert Series season closer on Friday, March 18 at the Church of Eternal Hills.
At the artist's reception after the two-hour concert she felt very good and really connected to the audience.
"I'm feeling satisfied. It is the same feeling after a very intense yoga class; you are so concentrated. I'm completely alert, all my senses are alive," said Perez.
"I loved the audience. I felt connected with them. That doesn't always happen, it is the element of the unknown."
Raised in Venezuela, Perez began her piano studies at age 11. She also studied at London's Royal Academy of Music, Italy's Accademia Pianistica Incontri Col Maestro, and Yale University. She now lives in New York City with her musician husband and their 10-month-old daughter.
Last year Perez was slated to perform at the Grand County Concert Series however her doctors advised her not to travel in her last trimester.
"My husband played in my place last year. I am lucky to have a husband who can do that," she said.
Life as a Musician-Mom
Life as a pianist has been different since having a child, she said.
"I am definitely making shorter trips, but now I will start bringing her to concerts."
This year has been especially tough. Her routine for practicing has been so different while taking care of her daughter.
"Being a mom, I don't know what is going to happen each day. I have to relearn how to do this a different way in my mind."
She studies the scores and practice a lot.
"I do my best with my practice, studying as well as I can, and sleep."
"With the baby, I'm relearning how to do certain things. Thinking about her could make me lose concentration while playing but it also can bring out the best," she said.
Her husband helps with baby duties and filling in when needed.
"I am very lucky that I have someone who understands me as pianist. He knows what I need and we respect what each other needs."
Perez is promoting her new CD, Spain that was released by Steinway & Sons in February. She will be performing in Washington, DC. for her next concert.
The Grand County Concert Series will announce its line up for next year in the fall.
