A day at the spa brings to mind thoughts of relaxation, calm, and well-being.

It may not bring to mind thoughts of learning something new, but the Ranch Creek Spa at Devil’s Thumb Ranch is out change that.

The world-class 18,000-foot spa at the resort ranch in Tabernash is offering a new “Enrichment Series” of health and lifestyle workshops this spring. The series is designed to help participants incorporate those feelings of calm and well-being they get from a visit to the spa into their everyday lives. The goal is to learn tools to live a more balanced, healthy, and enriched life.

And the cost? Nothing but a couple hours of your time.

“We wanted to do something a little bit different to bring in ranch guests, locals, and second-home owners,” said Kate Philbrick, spa and retail manager for Devil’s Thumb Ranch. “We would love for Grand County residents to come out and participate.”

All classes in the Enrichment Series are complimentary, open to the public and start at 11 a.m. in the Lookout Yoga studio at the Ranch Creek Spa. Classes run approximately 1-2 hours. Space is limited so reservations are recommended. Call 970-726-1054 to sign up.

The series was developed by Charity Baxter, executive director of spa and recreation, in response her client’s requests for more information about the spa treatments and related health issues.

“I have heard guests ask a lot of questions over the years about various self-improvement topics; skin care, nutrition and exercise, for example. I analyzed the most common questions we hear to get some directions on topics we should cover,” said Baxter.

The series topics vary from nutrition to yoga to communication.

On Sunday, March 1, “Everyday Aromatherapy” is taught by Tara Grodjesk, founder and owner of Tara Spa Therapy. Grodjesk has over 20 years of experience in massage, holistic health, and Ayurvedic treatments, based on a system of traditional medicine from India.

Grodjesk, who helped develop many of the natural spa products exclusive to Ranch Creek, will speak about essential oils and lead participants in creating their own unique blend.

“The Talking Stick” session on March 29 features Rob Hamilton sharing a distinctive communication tool that can improve brainstorming and help settle arguments in groups or between couples.

“All of our presenters are fantastic with so much information to share,” said Baxter.

Baxter describes the workshops as a mix of lecture and hands-on learning. For example, the Yoga Nidra session with Lisa Havlik on March 22 will be a true practice on yoga mats, not just an informational session. Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep” is a combination of relaxation techniques and “exercise without movement.”

In addition the new Enrichment Series, Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa has long offered other educational activities like nature hikes, bird watching, and youth Nordic ski lessons, plus regularly scheduled yoga classes for $20 (free to ranch guests).

After an April hiatus, the series will resume in May for a summer session.
