In the spotlight | 2018 Best teacher, K-8: Kelley Devore

For Kentucky native Kelley Devore, teaching is more than just a profession — it is a passion.

Devore is a kindergarten teacher at Granby Elementary School and this year the readers of the Sky-Hi News selected her as the best K-8 teacher in Grand County.

“I get to be with these kids every day as they learn and grow,” Devore said. “I just feel really lucky and blessed that I get to spend my days with them. I am at the ground level introducing them to what it feels like to learn and love to learn.”

Devore and her husband moved to Grand County six years ago after she accepted a job at Granby Elementary. Prior to the move, Devore worked in the banking world. She began her teaching career in Grand County working as a fourth grade teacher before transitioning to kindergarten the following year. It was a move Devore called “perfect.”

Devore oversees a class of 21 students this year at Granby and over the past several years has worked with varying class sizes.

The married, mother of one decided to pursue teaching as a career after working as a volunteer with children back in Kentucky. Her fellow volunteers told Devore she had missed her calling in life after watching her interactions with kids on a literacy program.

“I feel very proud and very lucky that the readers of Sky-Hi News would think of me to receive such an honor,” Devore said. “I am humbled that they would think of me in this light. You try your best every single day that you come to work and it is just a really good feeling that other people notice that, too.”
