Sky-Hi News: This is why we love celebrating the success of local businesses
Every October the Best of Grand seeks to honor the best in local businesses, the best nonprofit organizations and a few of the best contributions in our community.
With so much tough news out there, these readers’ choice awards are a fun, lighthearted way for the Sky-Hi News — and you — to take a moment to recognize some of our locals for the wonderful work they do.
It’s true. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the enormity of wildfire recovery work, and local and national divisiveness seemingly around every corner, there’s no shortage of depressing headlines, either locally or in national publications and TV newscasts.
Add to that the severe drought, worsening housing crisis plaguing Grand County and a crippling workforce shortage wrecking business, and it’s easy to get discouraged. For many people and businesses, 2021 brought another excruciating year.
But that’s also what makes the Best of Grand awards so special — at least for us. Getting this opportunity once every fall — and seeing where the contest leads — is one of the best things we get do at the newspaper, and we’re so excited to bring it back again for 2021.
Altogether, there are 97 awards divided into six categories this year. To get to the winners, locals nominated their favorites for each award. The top 10 entries were designated the finalists, and the winners were then decided by an online vote, in which almost 3,000 people participated, including some with local, national and international IP addresses.
With more than 37,000 votes cast during the Aug. 13-Sept. 8 voting period, we were once again blown away by the amazing participation. This truly is a contest picked by the community as we recognize some of the people, places and things that make Grand County such an amazing place to live and visit.
We’ve updated the contest a little this year, adding awards for Best Wings, Best Real Estate Office, Best Fundraising Event, Best Nonprofit Project and more. But more than anything, we hope you enjoy this year’s Best of Grand.
