2 GOP lawmakers want utilities commission audit

DENVER (AP) – Two Republican members of the state’s Legislative Audit Committee are calling for an audit of the Public Utilities Commission.

The Denver Post reports that Sen. Scott Renfroe of Greeley and Rep. Steve King of Grand Junction want an audit because of disputes over the PUC’s actions on cases involving taxicabs, telecommunications and power plants.

King announced the audit proposal Thursday.

The other five members of the audit committee must approve the request before an audit could move forward.

One of the PUC’s most high-profile case involved the conversion of some Xcel Energy coal-fired power plants to natural gas. The mining industry says two PUC members helped draft the law that led to the proposal, compromising their impartiality.
