3 vie for DA vacancy in southwest Colorado after attorney’s death

DENVER (AP) – Three attorneys are vying to be the top prosecutor in a southwest Colorado district after the death of district attorney Jim Wilson in a motorcycle accident.

Gov. Bill Ritter says the three candidates for the 22nd Judicial District are Andrew Michael Hughes and Russell Wasley, both of Cortez, and Mark Myers of Mancos.

Hughes and Myers previously worked as prosecutors in the office that handles criminal cases for Montezuma and Dolores counties. Wasley has served as chief deputy in the office since December 2008.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers is temporarily taking responsibility for prosecutions in the 22nd Judicial District.

Wilson died in a motorcycle accident on Interstate 70 west of Golden on May 22. He was 57.
