KREMMLING — The third annual 4-H Catch-a-Calf contest will take place this August during the Middle Park Fair and Rodeo. In order to compete, youth must turn an application in to the Extension Office by June 1.

The program was started to promote the 4-H beef project and get more kids involved in beef production. Raising a 4-H steer or heifer can be costly and time-consuming, and this program gives a start-up advantage to the participants.

The 4-H Catch-a-Calf program gives youth the opportunity to learn responsibility, animal care, financial planning, and business skills. Youth are guided through the project by 4-H leaders and sponsors, and are helped to succeed in every step of the program.

Local ranchers Dave and Karen Hammer of the Peak Ranch, and Clay and Amy Culbreath of Culbreath Ranches each donate a calf to the program. Youth who successfully complete an application are selected to compete, and catch a calf also receives several feed sponsorships to get them started.

Merrit Linke, Grand Animals 4-H Club, and the Middle Park Cowbelles have all donated feed sponsorships. In addition, last year senior beef project members Jace Linke and Nick Ritschard each donated a portion of their steer sales money back to the program. These generous sponsors have made the program successful!

If your child is between the ages of 8-18 (as of Jan. 1, 2016) they are eligible to fill out an application. Please contact the Extension Office for more information: 970-724-3436. Applications are due June 1.
