The Grand County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that five members of a Kremmling family lost their lives in a two-vehicle collision on the morning of Aug. 4 on Colorado Highway 9 about three miles south of town.

All five victims were residents of Kremmling and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identities are:

  • Manuel Cabral-Torres, age 34
  • Andrea Banuelos-Salazar, age 30
  • Maria Cabral-Banuelos, age 12
  • Manuel Cabral-Banuelos, age 5
  • Andres Cabral-Banuelos, age 2

Details of the collision

The cause of the fatal crash is currently under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol who responded to the collision near mile post 136 at approximately 7:17 a.m. on Monday morning.

The initial investigation of the crash found that a Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on Highway 9 when it drove into the southbound lane, striking a southbound GMC Yukon. The impact of this head-on crash caused both vehicles to catch on fire.

“First responders arrived quickly but despite heroic efforts, the family did not survive,” the coroner’s office stated in a news release.

The driver of the F-150, a 25-year-old male from Parker, was transported by air ambulance to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries. There were no survivors in the Yukon.

Colorado State Patrol’s investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been brought against any drivers at this time. If you witnessed this crash, please contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 970-249-4392, and reference VC25269.

Share donations for family’s GoFundMe

Javier Torres-Garcia, the cousin of Manuel Cabral-Torres, has started a GoFundMe to support the family. Community members can donate at GoFundMe.com/F/Help-Us-Raise-Funds-For-Funeral-And-Transportation-Expenses.

“We are asking for donations to help cover funeral and transportation expenses so we can give them a proper farewell, surrounded by their family and closest loved ones,” Torres-Garcia wrote on the page. “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank everyone who is able to help, whether through a contribution, sharing this page, or keeping us in your prayers.”

The coroner’s office stated in a Wednesday morning news release that it extends its deepest condolences to the surviving loved ones, friends and the entire community.

“The loss of an entire family is an unspeakable tragedy, and our hearts are with all who are grieving during this incredibly difficult time,” the office stated. “We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency crews who responded with courage, professionalism, and compassion under extremely dangerous and emotional circumstances. Their efforts are deeply appreciated.”

West Grand School District posted on Facebook that school resource officer DJ Elthorp is available for those in the community who may need support.
