Accountability committee will consider closing Middle Park High School campus

The East Grand Board of Education selected its top three issues for the District Accountability Committee to examine this school year ” possibly closing the Middle Park High School campus, examining the student handbook and potential adjustments to the school calendar.

Barbara Ahrens, board member and committee liaison, said the subjects the board has chosen will be difficult, “especially the opened and closed campus at the high school.”

“I think that will be a real challenge,” she said. “It’s something the board has talked about but we’ve never really brought it up with the community.”

The Middle Park High School currently has an open campus.

The committee also will review the K-12 student code of conduct and safety and discipline policies and procedures. Policy review and revision may be a topic of discussion and investigation, according to the board.

The committee will study and make recommendations related to the academic calendar for the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 school years, Ahrens said.

“They’re important issues,” she said, “and they’re issues that need community input.”

Teachers, staff, parents, high school students and community members can participate on the District Accountability Committee.

“Whoever would want to serve,” Ahrens said. “We’d like to have more parents … It gives us a community perspective on issues that we face, and they make recommendations and the district takes them under consideration.”

The committee also will monitor the school district’s accreditation contract with the Colorado Department of Education during one of the meetings.

About 35 people usually participate. The committee meets the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the district office. Members choose the topic they want to work on and split into subcommittees, she said.

The District Accountability Committee is required by law, Ahrens said. “They started in 1988 and there’s a district level committee and then there’s one at each school as well.”
