Airplane wreckage found near site of plane missing in Eagle County

WOLCOTT, Colo. (AP) – A search helicopter has spotted the wreckage of a plane in the Colorado mountains, but it’s not clear whether it’s a small aircraft that has been missing since Wednesday.

Officials say they have no word on survivors. A ground crew is on the way.

Eagle County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kris Friel (FREEL) says the missing plane is a twin-engine Beech 60 Duke whose registered owner lives in Brownwood, Texas. Authorities don’t know how many people were aboard or who they were.

Friel says a National Guard helicopter crew located the wreckage Thursday morning about 3 1/2 miles north of Edwards and 80 miles west of Denver.

Controllers lost radar contact with the plane at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday as it was preparing to land at the Eagle County airport.
