An Illinois driver was clocked at 112 miles per hour in downtown Granby
He was apprehended in Garfield County later that day
A man accused of vehicular eluding, speeding and reckless driving in Grand County was arrested in Garfield County, after allegedly being involved in a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday, May 21.
On Wednesday at approximately 1:09 p.m., a Grand County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to the Adams Tunnel in Grand Lake for a “suspicious person” and vehicle “that was parked in a no parking area,” according to the news release.
He was seen on surveillance video pulling on the doors to the tunnel and urinating.
A deputy made contact with the man, who was cooperative, and released the individual with a warning for trespassing. He was identified as Caleb Perry, 29, from Illinois.
At approximately 2:22 p.m., a sheriff’s sergeant stopped a black Jaguar being driven by Perry near the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and 40, due to citizen complaints of reckless driving. One person reported that the black Jaguar was driving 80 mph in a 50 mph zone and passed on a double yellow line.
While the sergeant was with Perry, a second report was made of additional passing violations on Highway 34. As the sergeant was preparing a citation for these violations, Perry sped away, “nearly causing a collision on the highway as he fled.”
Two additional sheriff’s deputies who were in the area began a pursuit as the fleeing vehicle continued eastbound on Highway 40 into Granby. One deputy clocked the vehicle’s speed at 112 mph in the 30 mph zone near the intersection of 5th Street and East Agate Avenue (Highway 40 going through Granby).
Law enforcement supervisors and officers evaluated the circumstances of the pursuit and considered factors such as public safety, the offender and the involved officers. Based on Perry’s driving behavior, combined with the fact that his identity was already confirmed, the pursuit was discontinued for safety reasons.
Deputies intended to seek an arrest warrant for Perry in relation to this incident.
Later that day, the sheriff’s office learned that Perry was involved in another vehicle pursuit with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody following their pursuit. He was booked into the Garfield County Jail for vehicular eluding, reckless driving, speeding and passing on left where prohibited.
On Thursday, May 22, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office prepared an arrest warrant for the traffic stop and pursuit in Grand County on May 21. The arrest warrant includes charges of vehicular eluding, a Class 5 felony; reckless driving; speeding; passed on left when not clear to traffic and passed on left when prohibited.
Garfield County was notified of the additional active arrest warrant for Perry.
