Angel DeCicco: We all need to come together to support our schools
To the Editor
Sitting in on East Grand School District board meetings and sitting on the DAC committee last year, I have observed and heard quite a lot. And I am compelled to write today to share what I can see and what I have heard.
I am hearing a lot about “Save Grand Lake, Save Fraser”, or “the school district is just trying to scare us”, and “the school district can’t manage their money, we need a new board to get it right.”
It saddens me to hear these things, when we all need to be coming together in Grand County as a whole and fighting for our schools, no matter the zip code. This is a nationwide problem, not just a Grand County School District dilemma.
We moved here five years ago, mainly for business but ultimately for the beauty and splendor of Grand County to raise our two small children in a small community and my number one focus was to become involved with the schools to be able to support them and our children.
Our children are our future, and it is our responsibility as adults to protect them and give them our very best, and it DOES take a village to be sure they get quality education and get exposed to as many opportunities to help them achieve great things and become positive members of society.
All this is to say that I believe we all must come together and support one another, not tear each other down. Listening to all suggestions being tossed around, it does make the greatest sense to ask for a raise in sales tax, this would save and protect all our schools district wide as well as eventually bring back the much needed programs as well as teacher and building support that has been lost over the past three years, this is in the best interest of all our children, it benefits all of our towns in the long run not just a few.
I know I am only one voice but I hope we all can get past “ourselves” and come together and fight for our all our communities, we cannot sit back point fingers and wait for our State or our Federal Government to come bail us out we must start at the local level and make changes for progress.
