Emilie’s Wine Bar and Tapas Restaurant in downtown Winter Park opened Memorial Day 2011.

“We had a great summer, and winter business has been good,” said Ian Dunlop, managing partner of Emilie’s.

Although tapas tends to be more Spanish, Dunlop says the menu is more “worldly.”

Jason Keen is the chef and has creative control over daily specials and all dishes behind the bar. A typical special is Jamaican Jerk chicken.

Keen attended culinary school in New Zealand where he learned to create classical French dishes.

The wine list is designed to be “approachable,” and happy hour at Emilie’s is called “Study Hall” referencing his wife’s profession as a teacher.

“It’s the time to goof off,” said Dunlop.

The $5 wine for ‘Study Hall’ is what is left over from the day before. “The wine could be an $11 glass or wine or better,” Dunlop said. “It changes from day to day.” They also have Sangria and bottled beer specials.

The combined tapas and wine bar is a unique restaurant idea, said Dunlop, who likes to refer to his business as “urban sheek.”

“The bar and restaurant is an oasis in Grand County. When you come here you will feel like you are going to the city with factory steel walls, a loft-like ceiling, and concrete bar.”

There is a deck where customers can sit and watch the sunset on warm days.

They will close for mud season on April 22, and reopen on Memorial Day. The restaurant opens at 3 p.m. every day, and earlier for lunch on busy weekends.
