West Grand District hires new superintendent
May 1, 2012
KREMMLING – The West Grand School Board hired Terry Vanderpan of Bozeman, Mont., to fill the West Grand School District superintendent position.
The father of four accepted the position and plans to move to Kremmling prior to his July 1 start date.
Vanderpan has been employed as an education benefits consultant since 2009, but because of the heavy travel and the fact he missed working with students and teachers decided to look for a superintendent position, he said.
He was the superintendent and principal of the Anderson District in Boseman prior to his consulting job, and was also the superintendent at Eureka Public Schools in Eureka, Mont.
According to his resume, Vanderpan has held a career in education – in positions from teacher to superintendent – since the early 1970s.
From 2001 to 2005, Vanderpan worked for the Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo. as that district’s principal, and from that experience, has a “good understanding of how the education system works (in Colorado),” he said. During that time, he had passed through Kremmling on his way to Steamboat Springs, but now looks forward to knowing the community better, he said.
“It’s obvious to me the folks in that community really care about the education of their children,” Vanderpan said. “I was very impressed with the interview process and the people I met. They are proud of their school system.”
Vanderpan and two other superintendent finalists took part in a tour of the town and district facilities earlier this month. The candidates were also interviewed by citizen committees. The decision to hire Vanderpan was unanimous on both the school board and the committee levels, according to district officials.
Vanderpan’s and his wife Lisa’s youngest daughter Danielle will be a sophomore at West Grand High School in the fall. Their daughter Kathleen will stay behind in Bozeman with Lisa, a speech therapist, to finish out that daughter’s senior year. The couple’s two other children, Andrea and Ryan, attend college in Bozeman and Grand Junction respectively.
The new superintendent said he looks forward to the “outdoor aspect” of the Kremmling area, which he considers a “healthy place” much like Montana.
Vanderpan fills the position of former West Grand Superintendent Kevin Chalfant, who voluntarily tendered his resignation in February for the opportunity to search for a position on the Front Range closer to his home.
