Annual Gore Canyon race a success

Grand County, CO Colorado

The annual Gore Canyon race took place on Aug. 18, with 6-man rafts and kayaks in several sizes racing against time through what is described as Colorado’s ultimate Class 4+ to 5- whitewater rapids. Class 5 whitewater is considered unnavigable and is not for recreationists without experience and good equipment.

The river through the area is bordered on both sides by private property, limiting river access to an area about 1/2 mile off Highway 9 on the Trough Road.

Eighty-four entries, including 10 rafts, from as far away as New Mexico, took advantage of a beautiful day and good water conditions, despite the on-going drought, to compete for the best times through five miles of challenges with names like, Spin Move Rapid, Stinkin’ Beaver Rapid, Haywire, and Tunnel Falls.

The race has been occurring for a dozen years or so, but sponsorship changed about five years ago to Timberline Tours out of Eagle.  Timekeepers Jackie Collins and Miranda Hicks from Timberline Tours volunteered their time on the upper part of the river to start each boat.

Vessels are timed from an area just above where the rapids start to the finish line at the Pump House, accessed from the Trough Road. The best times for this year were 21:13 for an “over 10 foot” kayak paddled by Jacub Nemic and 21:43 for a raft manned by the 8 Ball team, which finished behind Nemic for 2nd place overall.
