Another tanker crash closes I-70 in both directions near Silverthorne

Just hours after a tanker carrying magnesium chloride overturned in Silverthorne, another tanker has overturned on Interstate 70 on the way down from the tunnel. This time, the payload is potentially more deadly: liquid blasting agents, according to Lake Dillon Fire Rescue spokesman Steve Lipsher. The material is something used in explosives, he said, and the local haz-mat team has called upon a team from the Front Range to help out with the spill.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, both lanes westbound from the tunnel were closed, and the eastbound lanes were closed at Silverthorne.

Normally a truck carrying such material would be routed over Loveland Pass, but the pass was closed Tuesday afternoon and the truck came through the tunnel.

Some officials said they expected some motorists to detour through Grand County via U.S. Highway 40 and Highway 9 rather than wait on I-70.
