Specializing in a cappella music of the Renaissance and the 20th and 21st centuries, the Ars Nova Singers are a professional-core vocal ensemble composed of selectively auditioned choral musicians from the Denver-Boulder area. The Boulder-based ensemble makes their first appearance in Grand County’s classical music series. Thirty-two singers will be performing at the concert.”We’re pleased to be making our Grand County debut this summer, and we’re bringing a program of works from the Renaissance and the 20th and 21st centuries,” said Thomas Edward Morgan, Artistic Director. “The music will feature William Byrd’s extraordinary Mass for Five Voices (first published in the 1590’s), one of the great masterworks of the Renaissance, thoroughly satisfying both for singers and listeners. We’ll also perform contemporary works by Colorado composers Paul Fowler and Bill Douglas, and a set of Americana works for unaccompanied voices.”In its history, the Ars Nova Singers have presented over 250 performances of more than 100 different concert programs. With national recognition, the Ars Nova Singers have received funding from the Aaron Copeland Fund for Music in 2003 and 2004. They have also been recipients of grant funds from the Choral Program of the National Endowment for the Arts. The ensemble’s accomplishments include performances of the complete Responsoria by the eccentric late Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo to the premiere of new works by many Colorado and other American composers. They have performed new works by Libby Larsen, Stephen Paulus, Luis Jorge Gonzlez, Jan Gilbert, R. Anthony Lee, and Terry Schlenker. The ensemble has recently joined in a consortium commission of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky. “Ars Nova is a professional-core ensemble, meaning that we have a small group of professional singers who serve as sectional leaders, soloists, and vocal coaches,” noted Morgan. “We are also unique in that we re-audition the entire ensemble every two years, which allows new singers in the community an equal opportunity to participate in this selectively auditioned ensemble, and encourages current singers to continue to develop their skills.”Praised by Colorado’s critics over the years, audiences can count on being entertained with an evening of superb music by the Ars Nova Singers. The concert will be followed by a dessert reception in the fellowship hall of the Church of the Eternal Hills with the Ars Nova Singers.Music for a While, Henry PurcellMass for 5 Voices (1590), William ByrdKyrie, Gloria, Credo (Arvo Prt), Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus DeiAve verum corpus, William ByrdI would live in your love, Nathan JonesShakespeare’s Love (2012), Paul FowlerAs sweet and musical, Love is a smoke, How silver sweetOne touch of nature | If music be the food of loveChorale: Schaut Hin, Dort Liegt Im Finstern Stall , J.
