Authorities confirm man wounded by bullet at Lake Granby campground

Authorities have confirmed that the 62-year-old man who was airlifted to a Front Range hospital from the Roaring Fork Campground in Arapaho Bay on Saturday, Sept. 8, suffered a bullet wound.

Initially, law enforcement officials were unsure whether the man actually suffered from a gunshot wound. However, after further investigation, the Grand County Sheriff’s Department determined the man was hit by two pieces of a fragmented bullet that had traveled a long distance.

During the time of the incident the man was airlifted to a Denver hospital, treated and released the next morning.

The initial investigation indicated the victim was lying in his tent, preparing to go to sleep when he felt a pain on the side of his head. Numerous people were interviewed at the campground at the time of the incident and no one reported hearing any sounds like a gun being fired.

The sheriff’s department later determined by the location of the wounds on the man’s head and by the holes in the tent that a bullet traveling from the west struck something close to the tent and fragmented into two pieces. The fragmented pieces of bullet then traveled through the tent wall about two inches apart and struck the man in the head in two different locations.

Since the bullet traveled a long distance, it did not have sufficient velocity or energy to penetrate the man’s skull and resulted in injury to his skin only.

There are no leads or suspects in the case, which is now classified as inactive.
