2 separate avalanches halt traffic along Highway 40, Berthoud Pass
WINTER PARK — Two avalanches occurred Wednesday along Highway 40, both causing issues for traffic.
A small avalanche during the afternoon halted traffic as snow covered a portion of Highway 40 on Berthoud Pass.
Traffic was stopped just before 4:30 p.m. about five miles east of the entrance to Winter Park Resort.
The pass fully reopened at around 7 p.m. after CDOT crews cleared the snow.
A second small avalanche followed, at around 10 p.m., just east of the Robbers Roost Campground entrance on Highway 40. About 80 percent of the road was covered.
CDOT crews worked to remove the snow and the road reopened at around 10:30 p.m.
