Avalanche on Berthoud Pass triggers Search and Rescue
Grand County Search and Rescue members responded to a reported avalanche burial on Saturday afternoon on the west side of Berthoud Pass. The avalanche was initially reported by a passerby in a vehicle who stated he saw a snowboarder caught in the avalanche. GCSAR members were at the avalanche site within about an hour of notification. About twenty searchers checked the debris for signs of a buried subject.
Additional resources were requested from Clear Creek County’s Alpine Rescue Team and Flight for Life brought in an Avalanche Deployment Team from Arapahoe Basin. After several hours of searching and clearing the field with the Arapahoe Basin search dog, beacons and a Recco receiver it was determined that there was not a buried victim and the search was called off.
Several large human triggered avalanches were reported at Berthoud on Saturday. The avalanche danger in the Front Range was rated CONSIDERABLE by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
