Berthoud Pass opens two lanes

Photo courtesy of the Colorado Department of TransA rock slide sent debris on Berthoud Pass early Monday morning, June 27, including this boulder weighing 16 tons (size about 8 feet by 10 feet). Two lanes opened around 11 a.m. on the pass as workers continued to break up the large boulder into smaller pieces.

WINTER PARK, 11 A.M. – One lane opened on U.S. 40 at Berthoud Pass where a slide earlier today closed the entire highway, about seven miles east of Winter Park.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is alternating eastbound and westbound traffic through the area. However, a large boulder remains on the highway and equipment is on the way to break it up into smaller pieces for removal.

Heavy runoff this past weekend (June 25-June 26) peaked in the high country, which caused snowmelt carrying mud and rock debris to slide down the slope onto the roadway.
