Berthoud Pass parking area closed Tuesday
The parking lot, trailhead and restrooms at the top of the Berthoud Pass are closed today, Tuesday, July 21, while a helicopter delivers materials and supplies for the installation of a new avalanche control system at the Stanley Slide.
The U.S. Forest Service authorized and permitted the avalanche control system for use by the Colorado Department of Transportation last fall. The system is expected to be in use for the winter of 2015-16.
The “remote preventative avalanche release system” will be located on the Arapaho National Forest in a notorious avalanche shoot known as the Stanley Slide, which crosses US Highway 40 in two locations on the east side of the pass. This area is known to release significant avalanches that have, from time to time, closed the pass for days.
