Berthoud Pass work to begin May 18

Staff Report

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin work on US 40 at Berthoud Pass on Monday, May 18, to replace roadway, curb and gutters and guardrail.

Initial work will be low impact with the project team mobilizing equipment and project offices. The following week will kick off guardrail work and sand mitigation. Rotomilling and asphalt paving operations are not scheduled to begin until after the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The project is slated to begin on the Winter Park side of the project near Mary Jane, according to information provided by CDOT.

The project scope includes 11.4 miles from mile marker 233 to mile marker 244.3. The project is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 25. A&S Construction of Canon City is the prime contractor on this $5.6 million highway improvement project.

TRAVEL IMPACTS

Travelers can expect delays on US 40 during roadway improvements. Flaggers will direct travelers through the single-lane closures. Construction work hours will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. No night or weekend work is planned.

Speeds will be reduced to 35 mph through the project and width restrictions of 12 feet will be in place during working hours.

Motorists should be aware of possible traffic stops along inclines. Bicyclists and hikers must obey traffic signs and flaggers. To be added to the project update list, email US40Berthoud@gmail.com or call the project hotline at 970-557-4353.
