BLM begins Pumphouse Recreation Area renovations near Kremmling

Visitors to the popular Pumphouse Recreation Area on the Upper Colorado River will be seeing major renovations during the next month thanks in part to the fees they pay to use the area.

Last week, the Bureau of Land Management began the renovations, which include both new construction and remodeling of existing features to more effectively use the area and reduce crowding.

“These improvements will directly benefit visitors to this area,” said BLM Kremmling Field Manager Dave Stout. “Funds from the user-fees collected here are significantly contributing to these renovations.”

The existing campground is being remodeled to reduce the number of campsites from 12 to eight, and 10 new sites are being constructed. A second group campsite, an additional vault toilet and a new boat slide are also being added. User-fee revenue is funding $36,500 of the $185,000-project.

The existing group campsite will be closed until the renovations are complete, which is currently expected to be in late August.

About 30,000 visitors use this area 10 miles southwest of Kremmling each year. It is particularly popular with rafters and anglers. Visitors pay a $3 per vehicle day-use fee and campers pay $10 per individual site or $30 for a group campsite. User-fees from Pumphouse and the Radium Recreation Area downstream generated more than $52,000 in 2008.

BLM began charging user-fees at these areas in 1998 under the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program. Revenue generated from these fees is used specifically for maintenance and improvements at these sites.

A third group campsite and four trailer pads are planned for next year.
