Bodies of 24-year-old mom, son discovered at Rocky Mountain National Park in apparent murder-suicide

Sky-Hi News staff report

Two bodies found Friday at Rocky Mountain National Park have been identified as those of a young woman and her 17-month-old son.

On Monday, the Larimer County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Tristen Watson, 24, of Colorado Springs and her son, Christopher. The coroner ruled Tristen Watson’s death a suicide and her son’s a homicide. Both were found Friday at Rocky Mountain National Park with gunshot wounds.

No other information was released by the coroner’s office, but Tristen Watson’s obituary indicates she was pregnant, as it mentions a third life lost Friday at the park.

According to park officials, the investigation remains ongoing.

On Friday, park rangers were alerted to a suicidal person they were told was likely in the park, according to a news release.

Rangers found the vehicle near Upper Beaver Meadows Road on the east side of the park and, while searching for the vehicle’s occupants, discovered the two bodies on Beaver Meadow Trail. Traffic was held up for about an hour on the east side of the park during the search.

Park rangers conducted an investigation at the scene, and the two bodies were taken to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office for examination.

According to her obituary, Tristen Watson may have been pregnant with a daughter, Aspen Ann Watson, when she died. A November post on Watson’s Facebook page says she was due in June.

A memorial service for friends and family is being planned for Saturday, and the obituary asks people to consider donations to the National Alliance on Mental Illness of St. Tammany in Mandeville, Louisiana.

Assisting park rangers during the incident were Estes Park and Loveland police, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
