Bruce Many: We’re bankrupting future generations of Americans
To the Editor:
Thomas Jefferson said: “It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.”
Responsible people don’t purposely run up bills for their children to pay. Yet our government is doing that and worse. It is running up bills that our children, our grandchildren, and our great-grandchildren will have to pay – unless the country just declares bankruptcy. The federal government has been living beyond its means for decades. That’s irresponsible and immoral, and It must be stopped.
Please go to http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig4/ellis1.html and read the essay titled “Not Yours to Give.” This great speech, from an 1884 book, was attributed to Colonel Davy Crockett in the House of Representatives. That Crockett made the speech cannot be substantiated (no transcripts were kept of floor speeches at that time) and Crockett biographer Boylston is a disbeliever. Regardless, it’s an enlightening essay that should be required reading in our high schools.
Read it today. Then, in November, vote to oust the scoundrels who take our money and use it to expand government power in ways that would have the Founders rolling over in their graves.
