About 70 jobs to be cut at Henderson Mine & Mill

Sky-Hi News Staff

Portions of Grand, Clear Creek and Summit counties are steeling themselves for a round of layoffs scheduled for the Henderson Mine and Mill.

Approximately 70 jobs are expected to be cut from the two industrial operations.

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), which owns Henderson Mine and Mill, issued a press release on Thursday, Aug. 27, detailing spending cuts in the company in response to what they call, “market conditions.”

The release states, “FCX has revised mine plans at its Henderson primary molybdenum mine to operate at a lower rate.”

The release goes on to state that Henderson will experience a 35 percent reduction from previous annual production figures.

Officials in the company confirmed Tuesday an estimated 70 jobs will be eliminated at the Henderson Mine and Mill. That figure includes the elimination of jobs at both the Mine and the Mill.

Officials from FCX gave no comment when asked for a timeline on the layoffs or when they are expected to begin.

Henderson Mill is the largest property taxpayer in Grand County and by far the largest single contributor to the West Grand School District budget.
