Shaving Company features old-school flare with modern twist
GRAND LAKE – The character of the Grand Lake community, punctuated by both historic western elements and modern tourist town amenities, is now playing host to a somewhat forgotten calling with a rugged new twist.
The Colorado Shaving Company, located in downtown Grand Lake in a second floor suite overlooking the clear blue waters, offers an old school vibe with a modern edge. The business offers traditional master barber services such as straight razor shaves, haircuts and hot towels as well as tattooing services in a relaxed male-focused environment.
The Colorado Shaving Company is owned and operated by Master Barber DJ Parker, son of Colorado Avalanche enforcer and Stanley Cup winner Scott Parker. Parker opened his store in Grand Lake in November last year, operating on weekends throughout the colder months before expanding to full time service for the summer season. To augment the atmosphere in the shop, The Colorado Shaving Company offers a wide array of cigars customers can purchase and smoke during their visit.
Every customer at The Colorado Shaving Company receives a hot towel during his cut or shave. Parker mixes the shaving cream he uses in a cup right in front of his customers and sharpens his straight razor with a leather strap. The two barber’s chairs in the Colorado Shaving Company are family heirlooms for Parker, first purchased in 1910.
Parker and the Colorado Shaving Company come from a long family tradition of barbers, and that history is alive and well inside the shop. Parker is a fourth generation barber.
“This is what my grandmother and great-grandmother did in the basement of their house in New York City. They had a barber shop in the basement and the family lived upstairs,” said Parker. “As a fourth generation barber it is important for me to keep those traditions alive. It is cool to stand behind the chair my grandmother used. I can feel her presence.”
Tattooing at the Colorado Shaving Company is handled by Amaraunte Montez. Montez has been tattooing for over 20 years and has done work in Denver, Los Angeles and New Orleans as well as multiple European cities such as Amsterdam and London. Montez performs tattooing and piercing work and is experienced in various forms of tattooing such as portraiture, traditional tribal artwork, black ink work and other types.
“Anything the customer wants we can make it happen,” said Montez.
Along with shaves and tattoos The Colorado Shaving Company has a wide assortment of hockey memorabilia. Because Parker’s father is retired NHL player Scott Parker the wares displayed at the shop are all officially worn game jerseys, often signed by the respective players who wore them. The proceeds from the sales of the hockey memorabilia at The Colorado Shaving Company go toward Scott Parker’s charity, Parker’s Platoon, aiding wounded veterans.
Parker explained that while he was happy to take advantage of the business provided by tourists to the region, The Colorado Shaving Company is focused on locals and regular customers.
“They keep our business running,” said Parker. “We do what we do for the locals.” Parker said he offers a discount for local customers.
The Colorado Shaving Company is located at 928 Grand Ave. in Grand Lake Suite 206. They are happy to take walk-ins. You can reach them by calling 970-999-2733.
